National Autism Awareness

April is the month for autism awareness. Autism is defined as a genetic defect that affects the brain in various ways. The effects of autism are generally responding differently to day-to-day situations, but even this does not explain autism to its fullest, due to how case-by-case autism is.

An individual could have really high-functioning autism, and they are perfectly fine, while another person could have severe autism, where they need substantially more assistance with daily life than those who are not affected by autism as much or at all.

On top of the severity of the autism the person has, there is also the type of it, such as speech, perception, hearing, and even emotional responses.

During the month of April, a puzzle ribbon can be seen symbolizing autism. The puzzle ribbon represents the complicated circumstance of the autism spectrum. The puzzle ribbon consists of yellow, red, blue, and cyan puzzle pieces combined to form a ribbon.

With the amount of variations between the types of autism, social media has attempted to represent certain types of autism through shows. For example, the Good Doctor features a doctor with savant syndrome, which is a rare type of autism in which someone that has significant mental defects shows certain abilities that are above average.

Autism comes in all shapes and sizes, and above all else, autism allows those who have it to view the world differently than those without autism would.
